I have two current projects I'm really excited about. One is my series of comic strips,
"Out & About" ("Torta de Climão" in Portuguese), which I started
three years ago in Brazil. It's about Kevin and his friends, their challenges as LGBTQIA persons, difficulties in life, love, work, and daily situations, always with good humor and sometimes a little bit of irony. I talk mostly about funny situations in their lives, but I also touch serious topics such as homophobia, prejudice, sexism, and racism. Right now I am translating the strips from Portuguese to English, as well as creating new ones, and posting them on the website.
The other project is "Dixon & Friends," a series of children's books about a dog and his other dog friends. It talks about friendship and family with some fun tasks and exercises in the middle that kids and their families can do together.
2) Whom in your field do you admire most and why?
Laerte is a great cartoonist/comics artist in Brazil. She has a very clever sense of humor. I love the way she touches political topics in her comics and how sometimes she makes use of the nonsense to make comics.
3) How did you get into the comic book field?
I loved drawing and writing my own stories since I was a child. Comics seemed like the best way to merge both things.
4) On which title would you most like to work and why?
I'm really happy working with my own comics now, specially after "Out
& About's" book was released in Brazil last November. When I was a kid I used to read a lot of
"X-Men," manga, and "Turma da Mônica" (very popular Brazilian comics for children), always dreaming of working for their studios, but after a while I noticed I wanted to tell my own stories.
5) On what project will you be working next?
I am writing the graphic novel with the same characters from "Out &
About" for the Brazilian market and I am really excited about it. Hopefully it will be out in English as well!
